Gossip Girl is an American dramatic television series that airs on the CW. It is based on Cecily von Ziegesar’s book series Gossip Girl. It made its debut television appearance on September 9, 2007. The creators of Gossip Girl are Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The series is filmed in Manhattan, New York City, Brooklyn, and on the Upper East Side of New York. The show is currently in the middle of its third season.
Gossip Girl is narrated by an unseen blogger who is the voice of Kristen Bell. The storyline follows the lives of five privileged teenagers who attend one of the best private schools located in the Upper East Side of New York. The majority of episodes in the first season followed the book very closely. Every episode begins the same way: the blog page of the Gossip Girl and a picture from the pilot episode, followed by a recap of past events. Scenes change at a very past pace and Gossip Girl drops comments throughout all scenes.

The cast of Gossip Girl is comprised of nine regular recurring roles, all of which came directly from the book series. The main character is Blake Lively, who plays Serena van der Woodsen. She is the protagonist and is what could be called an “it girl.” Penn Badgley plays Dan Humphrey, who is a writer and somewhat of an outsider who inadvertently becomes part of the Manhattan group. Leighton Meester plays Blair Waldorf, who is a guy that’s in the very top tier of the Manhattan social scene. Chace Crawford plays Nate Archibald who is thought of as the “Golden Boy” of the Upper East Side and is extremely rich. Ed Westwick plays Chuck Bass. He is the antagonist of the show who has had somewhat of a troubled past. He is a womanizer and always causing some sort of problem.

The first episode only obtained 3.65 million viewers, which put it in last place for viewer numbers for its time slot, 9:00 pm Wednesday night. However, the series lost viewers during its second season due to strong competition from shows like Bionic Woman on NBC and Private Practice on ABC. The third season is also down to just two million viewers, making ratings fall.
Upon its premier, Gossip Girl received mixed reviews. It was a highly anticipated show for the 2007 season because of it being based on a New York Times best selling novel, but was later called a “guilty pleasure” rather than must-watch television by many reviewers and critics. Although it has received some negative reviews for not following the novel, Cecily von Ziegesar, author of Gossip Girl, has vocally supported the show. Initial negative responses changed somewhat over the course of the show’s first season, and critical response had drastically improved by the second season.
Gossip Girl and the members of its cast have been noticed for their work on the show and nominated and won awards at multiple award shows. It has been recognized at the Primetime Emmy’s in 2009 as well as the Teen Choice Awards in 2008 and 2009.
